RESCHOOL is a European research and innovation project funded under the Horizon Europe programme. The project supports energy communities with digital tools for managing energy, combined with strategies that actively engage residents and support behavioural change. In this way, RESCHOOL helps energy communities to get started, operate effectively, and remain successful over the long term.

Energy communities play an increasingly important role in European energy policy. In practice, however, it can be challenging to keep members actively involved, to make good use of energy data, and to participate in energy markets or flexibility services. RESCHOOL directly addresses these challenges.

The project develops a user-friendly digital platform that enables different energy systems and services to work together. The platform brings together energy data, forecasts, collective control, and flexibility services. In addition, it includes social and educational tools that help people become more aware of their energy use and actively participate, both at home and within their community.

A key element of RESCHOOL is the use of gamification and serious games. These tools explain complex concepts such as peak demand, self-consumption, and flexibility in a clear and practical way. This helps citizens better understand how the energy system works and encourages them to adapt their behaviour and stay engaged.

RESCHOOL’s solutions are tested in real-life pilot projects in several European countries, including Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Greece. Local energy communities are actively involved by testing the solutions, providing feedback, and jointly improving them.

With this approach, RESCHOOL aims to show how energy communities can develop into active, well-informed, and flexible actors within the energy system. In doing so, they make a concrete contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions, maintaining grid stability, and advancing the wider European energy transition.
